Existing Buildings - Training
Overview
Only energy assessors who are members of a Government approved accreditation scheme, such as Elmhurst, may produce legally valid EPCs and in order to join an accreditation scheme candidates must demonstrate, amongst other aspects, that they are appropriately trained and qualified. This will require candidates completing an approved Domestic Energy Assessor (DEA) qualification, or equivalent.
At Elmhurst we pride ourselves in providing professional and cost effective training. We currently provide appropriate training and qualification routes for both new entrants and existing practitioners wishing to enter the DEA market.
There are two routes available in order to become ‘Accredited' to produce EPCs for existing dwellings (details below);
New Entrant Qualifications
Asset Skills on behalf of Government have written a new qualification called the Domestic Energy Assessment Diploma, (link to the National Occupational Standards -NOS- for this qualification) which any person can enroll, and with training and study attempt to pass the nationally required standards. Successful candidates undertaking this route obtain a nationally recognised DEA Diploma, which is currently set at level 3 or the equivalent of an ‘A' level.
Elmhurst DEA qualifications are aimed primarily at new entrants to the energy assessment industry and draw on Elmhurst's (and our partner organisations) unrivalled experience in this sector. Elmhurst offer direct training new entrant courses leading to the National Federation of Property Professionals (NFOPP) Level 3 Award in Domestic Energy Assessment.

We also work with the following industry partners to provide alternative new entrant courses leading to the National Federation of Property Professionals (NFOPP) Level 3 Award in Domestic Energy Assessment.
- Bluebox Partnership (Part of the Allied Surveyors group)
- Property-careers.com
Existing Practitioners
Approved Prior Experiential and Learning (APEL) is an alternative route leading directly to accreditation (i.e. no qualification) which is only open to ‘Experienced Practitioners' who are experienced in surveying or energy assessment of residential property. Essentially the APEL route will map candidates previous experiences against the NOS and all APEL candidates will have to fill any missing areas with training and further learning. Candidates on this route will also undergo assessment to ensure the same standards are set as the qualification route.
Elmhurst offers a number of APEL routes to experienced professionals which are tailored to various professional groups including members of:
- Royal Institute of Chartered Surveyors (RICS)
- Chartered Institute of Architectural Technologists (CIAT)
- Chartered Institution of Building Services Engineers (CIBSE)
- Chartered Institute of Building (CIOB)
- Institute of Domestic Heating Engineers (IDHEE).
On successful completion, candidates will be deemed accredited to produce Government endorsed EPCs using the Elmhurst system.
